Selecting A Quiet Opener

Your garage door is the largest moving multi part system of your home! Most people use their garage as their main entrance and use it many times during the day, that is why it is a good idea to choose one that works as quiet as possible. The type of the door, its materials and design can definitely affect how loud it works, but most of the noise it makes comes from the opener. Garage door openers were invented in 1926 but became popular only after World War II, when home automation started gaining attention. If noise is your main concern then you should consider these 3 options of garage door openers.

Chain drive openers

This openers use a steel chain to move the door and they are very strong and durable, but they attend to be noisy. They usually cost less than other models and work best for garages that are not attached to your house or nearby neighbor’s house.

Belt drive openers

This model run on a reinforced steel belt and are almost silent. Reliable just as chain drive openers, they are recommended for homes where there is a living space attached to the garage and they won’t disturb either you or your neighbor.

Jackshaft openers

Also called Wall mount openers because they are mounted on the wall to the right or the left side of your door and connect directly to the torsion spring bar to operate your garage door. Because they do not have a belt or chain they are super quiet. Jackshaft openers are a common choice for limited garage overhead space and they are the most expensive out of all.

AC motors vs. DC motors

AC motors move the garage door at the same speed the whole time, on the other hand DC motors slow down just before the door finishes to open or close and that is what make them much quieter because they stop gently instead of stopping suddenly with a loud noise.
