Having your garage door frozen is very inconvenient and frustrating, when your garage door won’t open because it froze it’s important to stay calm and figure out how to solve it without causing any further damage.
Here are 4 tips to help you prevent your garage door from freezing:
Regular Maintenance
Garage door maintenance on a regular basis are required in order to keep your garage door in a top working condition , especially before the winter when the weather is harsh. Check the entire system for any visual damages and fix it before winter comes. Lubricate regularly all moving parts including the hinges, rollers and springs. Check the weather stripping arounds the door and also the bottom seal for any cracks and replace it if necessary.
Close And Open The Door
Using the garage door regularly can stop the ice from building up around the door’s weather seal. If your door is stuck because of the ice you can use the manual release cord to disconnect it from the opener and open and close the door by hand couple of times to break the ice. Once the door is moving smoothly again, pull the cord back towards the opener to reconnect it and use the opener to open and close the door. Although it is tempting to stay cozy indoors it is recommended to open and close the garage door in order to prevent it from freezing again.
Clear Out Standing Water, Snow and Ice
When winter is just around the corner don’t wait for freezing temperatures to hit, make sure to clear any stabding water near the garage especially where your garage door meets the ground. Most frozen garage doors are caused by poor drainage and if water builds up near your door, it’s likely to freeze. Keep the the driveway dry and don’t let it pile up around your garage.
Keep the Garage Warm
If your garage door is not insulated add insulation panels to the walls in your garage door to maintain a stable temperature. Use a garage heater it will help to prevent the cold air from freezing the door and its components.
